Résumé :	This research is concerned with the traditional urban enivironment of the ksar of ouargla ,Algeria, its purpose is to study the various characteristics of the settlement and to inivestigate both the nature and extent of the changes that have affected its housing environment .the work consists of four parts. The first part describes the local physical and human characteristics and their contribution to the development of the traditional built environment.it also includes an introductory study of the concept of ksour. The scond part devoted to an analysis of the character of the ksar; it reviews its physical evolution before and during the colonial period, and its structure and morphology .it also highlights the different aspects of the traditional ksari an house. The third part comprises a more general account of the process of development of the town induced by the oil industry and its effect on the traditional built environment.and focuses on the condition of the ksar today and the nature and extent of the changes that have affected its character. The study concludes with a resume of the whole work followed by a critical analysis of a project proposed by local authorities for the renovation of the ksar, and some comprehensive improvement recommendation which could possibly ensure a better redevelopment of the ksar.
