| Mots-clés : | Algeria , co-operative ,the relationship ,physical | Résumé : | The recent change in government policy towards housing co-operatives in Algeria , intended to produce a collective type of housing rather than individual detached houses , has called for a critical examination of the adjustements which might be necessary in the design design decision –making process in order to accommodate this change in policy.designing with co-operatives to provide a collective type of housing raises some problems which were not existent or did not matter in the provision of traditional individual detached houses
Examinationof the literature about the participatory design approach , and the nature of housing co-operative provision , suggested manyaffinities between the two practices .thus this study attempted to assess , theoretically , the possibilities of introducing the participatory design approach in designing collective housing schemes through the co-operative housing system in Algeria as a means to:
(i)provide information necessary to achieve a good fit between people and their built environment, and
(ii) bridging the communication gap between designers and users which will assist the orientation of housing co-operatives to produce a collective type of housing
The study examined the housing co- operative system and argued that unlike the tradition of co-operatives organized on a voluntary ba basis ,prevalent in some western countries , housing co-operatives in Algeria need a great deal of government financial support and other ecouragement if they are to be successful . in addition ,supporting services to the co-operatives such as educational programmes , technical assistance and information facilities were found particularly important not only to the success of the co –operative venture , but also to the cultivation of the idea of participation in design .furthermore , the review of design methodologies and and parameters involved in a participatory design approach revealed that agreat deal of research and improvement remain to be undertaken if the participatory design approach is to be fruitful if the participatory design approach iss to be fruitful when implemented in the Algerian context.
