| | Mots-clés : | tlemcen , the medieval , conservation ,Maghreb , the historical | | Résumé : | The historical towns in the maghred are undergoing many changes wich are mainly due to the negative increase of social and economical factors and the lack of maintenance of the building s , however currently positive action have been undertaken by the national government to improve and preserve the old towns ; this study is an attempt to propose alternatives for the conservation of the historical town of telmecen ; it is based on the study of the general aspects of the morphology , typology , and the present condition of the old town and the main weakbnesses of the present local and national policies , in addition to that , this stydy draws on field work undertaken which illustrates the problem three selected cases of medinas in the Maghreb have been chosen , which present attemps to promote the conservation of building .they also provide a record a of a valiant effort being carried out for the adaptation of medinas to present day life .
Finally , particular emphasis is on the conservation of the medine as ba whole . thev problems of how people will ract to future improvement and how the houses will be converted to other function are confronted .
General recommendation are suggested to make a start for future project , and proposals are made for a small sample , to show that the building may survive langer if adapted for today ‘ s needs
This study concludes with a resume of the whole work in which the author proposes that the local authorities undertake detailed work and crea te a workshop dealing
