Titre : Daylight optimasation for energy conservation in buildings : with reference to algeria Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Noureddine ZEMMOURI, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Importance : 165 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Architecture Mots-clés : Algeria ,energy , building , horizontal illumianance Résumé : Among the options for reducing the energy consumption of lighting in buildings is the effective utlisation of natural lighting , the psychological benefits of which are considerable , it is conventional to to express the level of daylight illuminance within buildings in relative rather than absolute terms as a fraction or percentage of the illuminance occurring simultaneously on an external horizontal surface exposed to the whole sky .this fraction known as the daylight factor , is a geometrical property of the room and window , and for a given sky luminace distribution , it is theoretically a constant independent of changes in the sky illumioance . basically it acts as a transfer factor whereby the internal illuminance at specific poits in a room can be determined by multiplication with an external horizontal illuminance reference value
These two elements , the sky luminance distribution and external horizontal illuminance can be assumed therefore to define the daylight climate of a region or locality
Current daylight design methods in Algeria use tge daylight factor concept based on the luminance distribution of a desely overcast sky this is questionable as such a sky seldom occurs in Algeria . the use of b external horizontal illuminance reference value based on French standards ( 5000 lux ) is also questionable , current daylight design in Algeria , based on these assumptions , have produced unrealistic and imprastical results as for example the overgalazing of buildings .this has led to the virtual neglect of daylight as a source of room illuminance and a reliance on electic light to produce the desired levels

Titre : Daylighting and cooling of atrium of buildings in warm climates : impact of the top – fenestration and wall mass area Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Morad rachid ATIF, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Importance : 177 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Architecture Mots-clés : daylighting , cooling , wall mass area , top- fenestration Résumé : Sunlighting and daylighting contribute greatly to the aeathetic value of an atrim n. however , today ‘atria are often found either overlit with extenensive cooling loads , or underlit requiring increased artificial lighting loads .the increase of the top – glazing area increases the cooling loads and decreases the lighting loads . the increase of the mass in the atrium walls decreases the maximum atrium temperature and the cooling load . furthermore , the mass distribution and its reflectance affect the lighting levels at the atrium floor
The purpose of this study is to investigate the simultaneous impact of the top- fenestration and the mass and reflectance bof atrium walls on the cooling and daylighting performance of atria in warm climates . it attempts to determine the optimum top- fenestration for efficient daylighting and low cooling loads
The daylighting performance was evaluated through illumination measurements in physical models in a sky simulator . the cooling performance was evaluated using the software transys 13.1 two types of top- fenestration were tested : horizontal and vertical south – facing , each with there alternate areas .the variations of the atrium walls included materials ( standard frame and heavyweight concrete ) and reflectance of the solid area . two and four – story atria were considered , each with square and linear configuration . the performance was evaluated for three warm climates
The optimum top- fenestration for efficient daylighting was determined . the daylighting prediction algorithm was extended to include the effective reflectance of the atrium walls . the the increase of mass in the atrium temperature , and the cooling loads this impact decrased from horizontal to vertical south – facing top – glazing
The vertical south – facing top- glazing and , to a lesser degree , the reduction of the glazed atrium cover by 50 % had more cooling benefits than increasing the mass of the atrium walls by a factor of 7 . the effect of mass was greater in fresno than in lake Charles .the need for mass increased in loer atria . . the study analyzed the combined effect of the top- fenestration and mass in the atrium walls on the maximum atrium temperature , the thermal loads , and the daylight available at the atrium floor

Titre : Design of new shopping centres in historic city cores Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : L Bouhalas, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Importance : 246 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Architecture Mots-clés : shopping centre, the U.K ,planners, architects Résumé : The first chapter is a brief introduction to the original idea of the shopping conception by looking back to the eastern bazaars and the 19 th century shopping arcades in the U.K. by giving some description regarding their layout as well as describing the factors acting as a major ingredient influencing their conception in general terms such as climatic conditions , and defining the shopping centre as one element in the texture.
The second part is basically describing the evolution of the shopping centre ‘s conception in the three distinct stages which are as follows:
-the centres of the first stage ( open mall)
- the second stage centres ( enclosed mall)
-the second stage centres ( multi- level centres)
The next step consists mainly in classifying all stypes of shopping centres into three main categories and introducing the problems of out-of –town shopping centre development in the U.K.
The aim of the first chapter is particulary to give a clear idea for the reader to understand as quickly as possible the historical backgraound of the shopping centre development.
The second chapter is divider into three distinct parts. The first part is mainly, looking and trying to explain the most important commercial factors which have a direct influence in attracting people more and more to the shopping centre as a place for retail.
The second part is essentially focused on describing planning and architectural components which constitute the shopping centre in design terms and their characteristics in relation to each other.
Also ,trying to present fire safety and its impact in designing as well as introduction some U.K.regulation applied in this kind of development in order to keep the place safe for the shoppers as well as ensuring safety for the environment in case of fire.
The third part consists of looking at the developer’s and local authority’s role in making the shopping centre happen.
The third and fourth chapters consist of the case studies which are the most important sections in the thesis , supporting the previous chapters.the two examples are analysed deeply in visual terms , presenting photographs with comments and criticism and in each case drawing up a conclusion.the two shopping centres are as below:
1.carlisle lanes shopping centre
2-york copergate shopping centre
The reason for taking these two examples is mainly becauce each one represent a particular type of shopping centre. For example , the lanes shopping centre is from an enclosed shopping centre group. The coppergate shopping centre is included in the group of open mall shopping centres. Each of them has its own characteristics different from the other one in terms of appearance in relation to the urban enivironment where it is located and inserted
The final chapter presents the conclusion of the whole thesis , leading to some important recommendation for the future concerning the inserted shopping centre design in a sensitive environment which planners, architects and designers are obliged to take into consideration , otherwise we will loose our
Heritage in the near future.
The final chapter essentially consists of a proposal scheme with a detail study in terms of planning strategy towards the central area of Glasgow and the site analysis adding the proposal scheme with an urban design brief explaining the whole points which I mentioned before in the fifth chapter.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Architecture Mots-clés : development, Algeria, the physical, socio- economic ,the factors, menaa , housing Résumé : This study records thegeneral development of menaa , a town in the aures region of Algeria .it deals mainy with the various factors that have favoured this development through time . it examines the process of expansion and describes the evolutionary transformations that have taken place in the life of the community and the impact of theses on the physical fabric of this town .the work is oranised in four sections
The first section deals with the general characteristics that have determined the growthe of the town , and it includes geographic, climatic and natural condition as well as social , cultural and economical aspests of the community
The second section presents in the first part the physical aspect of the town, its historical development and the changes through the process of evolution ,whereas the second part illustrates the socio- economic transformation of the town the factors as well as the consequences of this development
The third section contrains a typological analysis of the traditional housing of menaa in the first part ,and describes the changes that are taking place in the society through an analysis of the contemporary dwelling , in the second part .
The last section is resume of the whole work in which the main problems of housing are followed by some recommendation which might resolve them and some suggested guidelines for future developments.
