Empowering Young Researchers for Sustainable Ports
The Green Energy DZ Team (GEDT) is a multidisciplinary youth initiative established within the Laboratory of Maritime Sciences and Engineering (LSIM) at the University of Science and Technology of Oran Mohamed Boudiaf (USTO-MB). The team brings together motivated young researchers and engineering students committed to supporting the transition toward greener, smarter, and more sustainable port systems.
As the Youth Team of the GREENMEDPORTS Project, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, the Green Energy DZ Team actively contributes to the implementation of the project’s objectives at the Port of Oran, the Algerian pilot site.
Working under the scientific supervision of LSIM researchers, the team participates in several technical and research activities aimed at improving the environmental performance of port operations. Its main areas of work include:
- Assessment of maritime traffic to better understand vessel activity, energy consumption, and emission profiles.
- Evaluation of cargo-handling equipment to identify opportunities for modernization, electrification, and improved energy efficiency.
- Integration of renewable energy solutions, including solar and wind technologies, to support cleaner port operations.
- Digitalization of port activities through the implementation of smart monitoring and data management tools.
- Development of sustainable Port Reception Facilities (PRFs) based on circular economy principles.
- Support for the Carbon Footprint Platform, enabling the monitoring and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within port environments.
Beyond its technical contributions, the Green Energy DZ Team promotes youth engagement in research, innovation, and environmental sustainability. By combining scientific knowledge with practical field activities, the team aims to strengthen the role of young professionals in shaping the future of Mediterranean ports.
Through this initiative, LSIM continues to encourage excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and active participation of students and young researchers in international research and innovation projects, contributing to Algeria’s energy transition and the achievement of more resilient, low-carbon maritime infrastructures.
